Abstract/Contents: | Emphasizes the potential importance of protective eyewear such as sunglasses. Presents a story in which the author contracted the eye disease pterygium, "a fleshy mass of thickened conjunctiva that grows over part of the cornea usually from the inner side of the eyeball and causes a disturbance of vision." Explains that this disease, among others, is contracted from prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight, or from dry, dusty environments. Recommends that all superintendents require their crews to wear sunglasses when working outdoors. |
