Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard: | "A very rare, important book on golf course architecture and construction written by one of the great architects. The introduction is by his senior partner Harry S. Colt. It encompasses four subject chapters titled as follows:
I. General Principles of Economy in Course Construction and Green-Keeping II. Some Further Suggestions III. Ideal Holes IV. The Future of Golf Architecture
Dr. Alister Mackenzie emphasized the merits of designing a golf course by taking advantage of the natural features of a site rather than using extensive soil excavations. He practiced his art worldwide. The book emphasizes English golf courses. There also is a small section on golf turfgrass maintenance. An early classic book that is a must for collectors of historical golf books. Dr. Mackenzie gave the following thoughts concerning earthworm problems and their control on golf courses:
It is now an absolutely exploded fallacy that worms are of any use on a golf course; they should be got rid of by the use of charcoal obtained from steel furnaces: ordinary wood charcoal is almost useless. Charcoal in this form acts mechanically, owning to the small sharp pieces of steel attached to it: it scratches the worms and prevents them getting through." p. 273-274 |
