Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard:"One of the oldest books published on lawns in the United States. Its popularity at that time is evidenced by the numerous reprintings. It is a rare book that is a must for collectors of historical turfgrass books. This small book is devoted primarily to site preparation and establishment of cool-season turfgrass lawns in the northeastern regions of the United States, with short chapters on the culture of lawns. The chapter subject titles include the following:

- The Small Lawn, Old and New
- The Treatment of Large Areas
- Grass Seed
- Sowing the Seed
- Sodding
- Good Loam and Fertilizers
- Lawn-Mower, Roller, and Hose
- Weeds and Other Pests

Concerning the problem of earthworms in lawns and suggested irrigation techniques, the author indicated the following:

. . . an application of lime-water will drive many (earthworms) to the surface, where they can be swept up; or a heavy rolling with a 1,500-lb roller will do much to discourage them." p. 213-214
Beard Section Heading:Bibliography of books/monographs on turfgrass culture
Beard Rarity Statement:Rare
Beard Special Note:Identified by James B Beard in Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf (2014) as being old and rare based on his experience.
Quotable quotes"A well-made lawn is a testimonial to a hustler. whether the area is small or large." p. 1
"Next to having good seed to sow, on properly prepared ground, the great essential in lawn-making is a proper kind of roller to use as occasion requires." p. 41
"You never see a gardener using any spraying contrivance on the end of a hose. In his thumb and forefinger, which he skillfully moves over the flowing stream, he has a combination of sprayers that can produce the heaviest stream or the finest mist at will. This is to be recommended, but few will care to follow the course of training necessary to acquire the efficiency of the gardener." p. 45
"There is only one sure way of eradicating weeds, and that is by cutting them out with a knife as soon as they appear. Delay in the attack will give them time to bring up heavy reinforcements." p. plate between p. 48 & 49
"So much has been written on the subject of lawn-making that about every one interested in this work is fully competent, theoretically at least, to carry through the process of land renovation and preparation, whether it be for a small lawn or an area consisting of acres. The subject along these lines has been exhaustively treated, ...." p. 13
