| Abstract/Contents: | "Results are reported from four trials at Bingley of 16 cultivars representing five fescue species, including hard fescue, sheep's fescue and fine-leaved sheep's fescue. Botanical nomenclature is discussed briefly to justify the Latin names used throughout the report. Trial managements ranged from row plots cut once or twice a year to sward plots mown frequently at 20 mm. The 16 cultivars are compared - for persistence, compactness and appearance - amongst themselves and with red fescue cultivars, particularly 'Highlight' Chewings fescue. For most management regimes, in climatic and soil conditions similar to those of the trials, none of the 16 appears equal to 'Highlight', with the possible exception of 'Biljart' and 'Scaldis' hard fescue. For different conditions, however, or for establishing natural grassland, other cultivars might have merit. The special features of Festuca pseudovina are noted." |
