Abstract/Contents:"Vegetation structure, herbage quality, production and utilisation of centipede grass and bahia grass swards grazed by cattle as adjacent monocultures were compared for 3 years. Detailed structure of the centipede grass sward (densities of tillers, stolons and leaves, mass of sward components) was also investigated. Centipede grass was almost always shorter than bahia grass, but had similar or higher herbage mass from May (late spring) to August (late summer) and lower herbage mass thereafter (autumn), resulting in almost consistently higher sward bulk densities. Dry matter digestibility of leaves of centipede grass was higher than or similar to that of bahia grass. Crude protein concentration was lower than or similar to that of bahia grass from May to July (mid-summer) but was higher than that of bahia grass in October-November (mid- to late autumn). Centipede grass had high tiller densities, high stolon densities and high live:dead leaf (lamina) ratios during the growing season. It produced 9.5 t/ha DM and was highly utilised by animals (102%), whereas bahia grass produced 8.0 t/ha DM and showed intermediate utilisation levels (84%). The results show the potential of centipede grass as a forage resource and as an alternative to bahia grass in the low-altitude regions of south-western Japan, though further studies are needed to evaluate its performance as a sole pasture under a range of meteorological conditions (particularly low rainfall years) and low fertiliser levels."
