| Abstract/Contents: | "A number of varieties of Festuca rubra were grown on filter paper laid out on plastic foam in salt solutions for a period of 4-7 weeks. In trial 1 calcium chloride without nutrients was used. In trial 2 the seeds were grown for 2 weeks in a weak nutrient solution before the sodium chloride was added. From trial 3 on the seeds were grown in a sodium chloride solution with nutrients added (1% of NPK 6-1, 6-5, 6). The relative germination (i.e. the number of surviving plants as per cent of the number grown without salt) after the test period was recordd. A clear difference between varieties has been shown. In all cases Polar has been the superior variety to survive a high salt concentration. Screening for salt tolerance is now being done in a large material as a good tolerance is thought to be of importance for grasses on road verges, etc." |
