| Abstract/Contents: | "As part of a field survey in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and the UK, the diagnoses of dollar spot (Lanzia and Moellerodiscus spp.), brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani) and pythium blight (Pythium arrhenomyces) diseases using a diagnostic test kit method and laboratory cultural techniques were compared. In all cases (57 dollar spot samples, 3 brown patch samples and 13 pythium blight samples), the diagnoses made using the test kit and cultural methods were the same. In 1990 and 1991 a field trial was undertaken to investigate the role of the test kit in the timing of fungicide sprays for control of dollar spot disease. Using the test kit method to assess disease risk, effective disease control over 2 years was achieved by 5 fungicide applications, compared with 8 applications being necessary where traditional visual assessments of disease were used. A lower threshold, for example, at trace levels of disease (0.1 - 0.2% plot area affected), would have led to earlier fungicide treatment with possibly fewer applications being made over 2 seasons. However, dollar spot disease is generally not identifiable by greenkeepers at these low levels and consequently, the probability of mis-identification would be greater." |
