Abstract/Contents:"A great diversity of seed mixtures for private gardens exists on the market. It is, however, very difficult for the consumers without adequate knowledge to find the right seed mixtures for their gardens. Their choice would finally depends on the price and the advice of a specialized sales assistant. In the context of a bachelor dissertation defended at the University of Applied Sciences in Hohenheim, Section Turf, tests were made with standard seed mixtures commercially obtainable. In a field test the commercially available standard seed mixtures were sown following the instructions given on their label near genuine seed mixtures correctly sorted by a turf specialist. They were then compared with one another. Growth and aspect were also evaluated. Furthermore, tests on their germination capacity were made in order to facilitate the interpretation and the comparison of the different seed mixtures. The results revealed that the aspect of the seed mixtures was as indicated on the label. Bu, as for their capacity of germination, a lot of fluctuations were to be noticed. They resulted from the long way they had to do from the producer over the enterprise mixing the seeds to the intermediate distribution firms until the ultimate consumers. The differences in quality between the commercially available mixtures were far more important than the differences between the commercially available standard seed mixtures and the other ones. Agricultural varieties of seeds were to be found in very cheap seed mixtures, which were inappropriate for well-maintained turfs. Last but not least, some seed mixtures resulted in an inhomogeneous picture because of a bad choice of varieties and seed species. At the end, high quality seed mixtures bring a high quality sward."
