Abstract/Contents:"A fungicide trial was conducted on a 16-yr-old sward of creeping bentgrass grown on a sand/peat root zone (pH 6.2) at the University of Georgia-Griffin campus. Fertilizer treatments consisted of 1.0 lb and 0.5 lb nitrogen (Lesco 24-4-10) per 1,000 sq ft applied on 6 May and 10 Sep, respectively. The turfgrass was maintained at a height of 0.2-in. by mowing three times per week. Treatments were arranged as plots (3.3 ft x 5 ft) in a randomized complete block design with four replications. An initial application was made on 27 Apr and followed by additional fungicide applications at a 14 or 21-day interval. Fungicides were applied using 2.0 gal of water per 1,000 sq ft with a hand-held, CO2-pressured boom sprayer at 30 psi using XR TeeJet 8002VS nozzles. On 28 Apr, the experimental plots were inoculated with a bentgrass isolate of Sclerotinia homoeocarpa grown on a tall fescue/barley/wheat seed mixture, previously soaked in water overnight and then double sterilized in an Erlenmeyer flask. The plots received approximately 0.24-in. of irrigation water daily at 15:00 and 17:00 hr to ensure foliar wetness for infection. Dollar spot infection centers were counted at 7 to 14-day intervals from the initial application date. Values were subjected to analysis of variance, and means were separated using Fisher's protected LSD at α=0.05. Dollar spot incidence progressed rapidly, with 109 infection centers formed by 6 Jun. Throughout the study, all treatments provided significant (α<0.05) disease suppression compared to the non-treated check. It is noteworthy to mention that except for Insignia 20WG 0.9 oz and the untreated control, dollar spot infection centers observed in the rest of the treatments were small with a mean of 0.4-in. in diameter, while the infection centers on the non-treated control and Insignia 20WG 0.9 oz had a mean of 2.3 in in diameter. No phytotoxicity was observed for any of the treatments."
