| Abstract/Contents: | The development is described of grass cover on roadside embankments after sowing with a particular seed mixture. There were 293 different plots, sited on red sandstone, limestone or greywacke/shale. The investigation of plant communities and soils on the embankments involved assessment, in each sward, of species number and cover. Turf development was closely related to parent rock, soil acidity, age of sward and site aspect. The final composition of a turfgrass community did not depend only on the balance of species at sowing; the site, through all the characteristics which affect plant life, exerted a much greater influence. |
