| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the way a golf course architect views a golf course compared to the way a golf course superintendent does. Suggests that "most golfers would prefer to play on a course which is interesting and challenging in its design though badly maintained rather than on a dull course in tip-top condition." Describes the ideal putting surface as "true and smooth, not too hard and yet not too soft. The greens will be completely free of weeds. The greens will have no blemishes cause by petrol or oil, or by careless application of materials which can scorch like selective weedkillers or mercurial fungicides." Adds that in addition to spotless greens, the absence of grass clippings is another sign of a good golf course. Notes that the condition of the bunkers, temporary greens, tees, fairways, and fittings are all contributors to the overall look of the course. |
