Abstract/Contents:Methabenzthiazuron at 2.10, 2.80 or 3.50 kg/ha was applied at each rate (1) before turfgrass emergence, (2) when 3 leaves were visible, and (3) at full tillering. It was compared with MSMA (monosodium methane arsonate) at 5.5 kg/ha applied either at (2) or (3), for Poa annua control in the following grasses: Festuca rubra ssp. commutata cvs. Highlight and Koket, F. rubra ssp. multiflora cvs Agio and Novorubra, F. rubra ssp. litoralis cvs Dawson and Manoir, F. ovina var. duriuscula cv. Biljart, Poa pratensis cvs Fylking and Sydsport, Agrostis stolonifera cv. Prominent and A. tenuis cv. Holfior. Seed sowing rates were 30 g/m2 for Festuca spp., 12-15 g for Poa pratensis and 5-7 g for Agrostis spp. Seed of Poa annua was deliberately added to each batch to give a standard rate of infestation of 1 g/m2. Turfgrass phytotoxicity occurred in many cases when methabenzthiazuron was applied to F. ovina, P. pratensis and Agrostis spp. Control of P. annua was better when herbicide was applied at stages (1) and (3) than at (2), but MSMA was only efficient at stage (1). Satisfactory control was obtained with 2.10 kg methabenzthiazuron applied at stage (1) for all F. rubra cvs except Koket (where it was 80%) and the higher rates were not phytotoxic to these cvs. At stage (3) control was satisfactory with the higher rates for all cvs except Novorubra and Manoir.
