Abstract/Contents:The effect of hollow tine cultivation on shoot and root growth of a heavily compacted "Cheri" Kentucky bluegrass turf was studied. All plots received 6 passes of compaction per week with a Ryan's water filled vibrating roller. HTC was applied on 7/6/88, 8/10, and 9/28. Fresh clipping yields were collected on various dates. Root weight was analysed on 10/88. HTC reduced shoot growth up to 3 weeks following the second treatment as compared to the noncultivated control. Heavy compaction added to high temperature stress that season could explain the unexpectedly reduced yields. When air temperature declined, there was no difference observed between the HTC and the check plot clipping yields. This data shows that if turf is already weak, then midseason cultivation could be harmful. HTC had no significant effect on total root weight or root weight densities. This suggests that intense cultivation may not have a major impact on root weight in a single season.
