Abstract/Contents:The U of M has aerified for many years. Aerification was with solid and hollow tines 3" to 6" deep, twice a year, followed by overseeding with a P.T.O. driven disk seeder. The results were consistently poor in the areas of heaviest compaction. Such areas included the shallow outfield of softball fields, and the center areas on soccer, rugby, and intramural football fields. When they changed to deeper aerification (12" to 18") an improvement in drainage and seed germination was noted. Solid tines were used because they can penetrate deeper without breaking, especially in the local rocky soil. A change from overseeded kentucky bluegrasses or mixtures with improved perennial ryegrasses to overseeded blends of perennial ryegrass or blends of improved tall fescue varieties alone. Experience suggested that these seed mixtures produced the most durable playing surfaces. The tall fescues are also tolerant to drought. Cold tolerance has not been a problem yet. Tall fescues were planted in selected areas for 5 years, such as in a major new intramural facility in the spring of 1988. Reports as to its success as a standalone field cover will be forthcoming as more data becomes available.
