Abstract/Contents:Describes the "no-spray" program designed for implementation at the Resort at Squaw Creek, near Lake Tahoe, CA. As a result of pre-construction agreements, levels of fertilizer in groundwater will be monitored, a no-spray management program was initiated, and a "Technical Review Committee" created to oversee the no-spray program, made up of local residents, public health officials, a representative of the Sierra Club, the developer, the local water company, and a toxicologist. The "Chemical Application Management Plan," developed by the Committee specifies that, "Weed control will be accomplished by mechanical methods only. In the event all practical mechanical methods fail to produce sufficient weed control, the golf course superintendent may apply approved herbicides in the form of 2,4-D (Weed-B-Gone) and glyphosate (Roundup) to maintained, fertilized fairway and tee areas only." The only fungicide approved for use on the greens in Fungicide II (6% chloroneb). The management plan allows no increased tolerance level for fertilizers, based on groundwater monitored background nitrate levels. "Between five and ten additional staff members have been hired to pull weeds." "The additional manual labor, test wells and other costs represent, as a rough estimate, an additional $20,000 over what conventional methods would cost." Includes comments from Superintendent Carl Rygg.
