| Abstract/Contents: | "Two types of preliminary lawn tests are described. 1. Row test. One metre single rows are sown 25 cm apart, two replications. Recommended seeding rates per metre: Agrostis stolonifera 0.25 g, Poa pratensis, Festuca ruba and Lolium perenne 0.5 g, Phleum nodosum 0.5 - 1.0 g. The rows should be sown in the mowing direction. 2. Miniplots Two plots per variety, measuring 50 x 50 cm, are sown on a 2.5 cm layer of standardized soil (Enhetsjord) on wooden hardboard. The seeding is done in the green house during late winter - early spring. Seeding rate for Poa pratensis: 5 g per plot. Fertilizers and fungicides are applied when necessary. The plots are mown to approx. 3 cm cutting height. When established the plots are transferred to the field. Both test types need only small amounts of seed and can be used already in the testing of plant progenies. The row test gives a good indication of the spreading ability of the varieties whereas the miniplot test can be assessed liike a conventional lawn trial. The miniplot test method was used only in Poa pratensis in 1976, but it will be used in the future as a pretest in our normal plant breeding work also in the other species." |
