Abstract/Contents: | Overviews the impact that unpredictable weather conditions can have on golf course maintenance. Suggests that golf course superintendents must react "to how the turf responds to adverse environmental conditions" so that the turf remains at optimum playability. Provides "game plan dos" to potentially counteract indecisiveness in maintenance programs, including scheduling aeration, knowing the mowing height, topdressing in response to the growth rate, rolling to complement mowing procedures, improving putting surface conditions, fertilizing the grass, and limiting mechanical stress. Adds that there are some methods that could potentially ruin playing conditions, such as mowing too low, topdressing according to the calendar, verticutting often or aggressively or wearing out and starving the grass. |
