Abstract/Contents:For Michael Magnani, an interest in bicycle racing indirectly led to a career in golf. During his training to make the national cycling team, he was invited to work at La Costa C.C. by superintendent and friend Ron Holden, who told Michael he could train as much as he wanted. After Mike qualified for the nationals, but failed to make the national team, he decided to continue working on the golf course at La Costa. Mike enjoyed being outdoors and moved up through the ranks. About four years later, Dick Rudolph made Mike a foreman. The next move up was as an assistant superintendent. In 1989, Mike moved to Carmel Highlands Country Club in San Diego as superintendent. He feels the life of a superintendent "is the best of both worlds. You get to be out doors and golf is a great game-this is the perfect job."
