| Abstract/Contents: | A new grade of turf was laid on a bowling green in West London. The Tip Top Turf company has introduced the culitvar Sefton. It is rated "A" for compactness, fineness of leaf and for its short growth characteristics. The company supplies five specialty grades of turf. There are approx. 700 acres at the main nursery, which has a medium loam soil, and 300 plus acres at another nursery which has a good loamy sand soil. The culitvar Cindy is a creeping red fescue, which has an STRI "B" rating for tolerance of close mowing. The turf for golf tees called Elite is a mixture of Cindy and Limosine; a smooth stalked meadowgrass, which is rated "A" for compactness, fineness of leaf and short growth. Supaturf is a grade for general landscaping applications. Lawn Tech has developed a turf laying machine called Big Roll that can pick up a 25 sq. yard roll of turf, carry it through a 36" wide gateway, and lay turf even in wet conditions and on banks. It can lay turf at the rate of up to 500 sq. yd./hr. There are fewer joints in the turf because it is laid in a long strip. This may reduce unwanted weeds and grasses growing through. A "piggyback forklift" can carry rolls of turf to the Big Roll. Tip Top Turf is one of the few companies harvesting turf for the Big Roll. |
