Abstract/Contents:"Carmel Highlands golf course superintendent, Mike Magnani, formerly assistant a La Costa, has vastly improved the beauty and playability of the course since September 1989. Mike and his crew have rebuilt nine of the old tees. A colorful array of plants and flowers align the tees, all of which are elegantly surrounded by the imaginative accent of used telephone poles. Mostly native soil was used, although four inches of topsoil was added as an improved growing medium. The tees were then sodded with hybred 328 bermuda. Five more are targeted for '91 and the rest are scheduled for '92." Mike's responsibilities include the clubhouse and landscape around the meeting rooms, spa and 176-room lodge. His worst problem since arriving here-irrigation. Currently the course is using all city water and that source may not be around much longer. The course plans on drilling a well soon and creating a pond out of a large bunker. After that, installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system is on tap. " Mike's relationship with Director of Golf, Mike Flannigan, has helped him succeed in carrying out his plans to make the golf course one of the best. Flannigan backs the plans that Maganani draws up to enhance the course." This relationship is the backbone of all operations. The conditions and improvements on this course in the last two years are excellent.
