Abstract/Contents:An innovation in laser controlled machinery means that 7500 sq m of topsoil were laser-levelled in a single day's work at the University of Birmingham to allow almost instant seeding of the rugby union football pitch by Grant Sport Construction of Nottingham for the new season. A Caterpillar tilt dozer, a D4H, was specially fitted by laser specialists at John Kelly Lasers with Laserplane control of the blade. Surfaces can be planed plus or minus 5mm over an unlimited distance. The system can also precisely doze transition and superelevated surfaces such as those on a banked running track and other features.
