Abstract/Contents:The fertilizer study was devised to minimize grass clippings while producing a satisfactory lawn color at a reasonable cost. The Aurora University campus was divided into 15 areas bordered by sidewalks and streets with athletic fields as a "control" since they have been the standard for most lawn maintenance programs. A different fertilizer was used on each test plot. One plant growth regulator (Diethanolamine salt of mefluidide) was tried. Every two weeks plots were mowed and the clippings were collected and measured by volume per 100 sq ft. Lawn color was visually assessed on a scale of 1 to 4, 4 being very green. The PGR used was Diethanolamine salt of mefluidide. Spring treatment with the PGR turned the lawn brown for a week. Fall treatment with the PGR turned the lawn brown until snowfall. Due to turf injury and high cost, PGRs are not the panacea sought for. The best overall fertilizer mixtures were 24-4-14 and 25-5-14, on the basis of low cost, average color, and low clippings weight. The tables list 16 fertilizers classified by fertilizer analysis, sources of nitrogen, cost, color ratings, and clippings volume.
