Abstract/Contents: | "Plots, 6 by 20 ft, were established in a commercial Lewis County, Idaho bluegrass seed field where a heavy Puccinia spp. infestation was observed. Treatments were applied in 25 gal of water per acre using a CO2 backpack sprayer equipped with hollow cone nozzles. Plots received two applications of either Bravo 720, ASC66811, ASC66792 FL, Tilt, or Folicur 3.6 F. Applications were made at either Feekes stages 8 and 10.1 (3 and 11 May), or at stages 10.1 and 10.5 (11 and 22 May). Application tracks were made through the untreated control plots at Feekes 8 and 10.5. Treatments were replicated six times, and all treatments except the control were included in a split-plot analysis to evaluate the effect of application timing. Unusually dry weather in March, 1990 reduced commercial yields throughout the area. Rust pustules were easily observed 3 May and a heavy infestation continued to develop until crop maturity. Application timing did not effect disease scores on the penultimate leaves, but plots receiving the lst application at Feekes stage 10.5 did have lower flag leaf disease scores than plots treated earlier. The fungicides tested were generally effective in reducing the incidence of rust pustules and prolonging the health of the leaves examined. The effect was more pronounced on the flag leaf, and the early application timing tended to be slightly more effective on the penultimate leaf. The two formulations of ASC66792 did not differ significantly, and scores of ASC66811 treated plots were not significantly better than the untreated plots. As in a similar, 1989 test, no significant yield effects were measured in this test (F=1.04, df=12,60; P=0.42)." |
