Abstract/Contents:Discusses tactics that can be used to prevent the growth of summer annual weeds on sports turf. States that summer annual weeds are often a problem for high-traffic turf because they often enter the winter as bare soil, leaving large patches of soil open for germination by weeds. Lists three of the most common types of annual weeds: Crabgrass, goosegrass, and prostrate knotweed, as well as their germination periods and typical appearance patterns. Gives solutions for the prevention of weed germination through the use of seeding, suggesting the use of perennial ryegrass. Notes that overseeding should be done regularly during the season in order to maximize the area of the field that is covered by turf at all times. Discusses methods for the use of herbicides to prevent summer annual weeds, giving instructions for a variety of options. Mentions the possible use of sod as a way to suppress weed growth as well as providing instantaneous turf coverage.
