Abstract/Contents:Discusses the factors that determine the firmness of a golf course putting green. Explains the ways in which firmness affect play during a game of golf. States that firmer greens lead to more ball skipping and rolling, while softer greens are more receptive to shots, but also take increased damage from spikes, traffic, and scalp more easily during mowing. Presents data collected from various golf course greens which shows that the firmness of a green is most related to the depth of thatch rather than the composition of the thatch. Concludes that if a firmer green is desired, courses should attempt reduce levels of thatch through scarifying, topdressing, grooming, brushing, and core aeration.
