| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses Himalayan balsam, a species of flowering plant native to India that has become an invasive species in the U.K. States that it often colonizes on riverbeds and invades other vegetation, leaving soil to erode into the river when the plant dies in the fall of each year. Notes that the seeds of the Himalayan balsam are only viable for one to two years. Explains that 2,4-D and glyphosate are both effective in controlling Himalayan balsam. States that there is research being conducted by the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux (CABI) to find a fungal disease or animal that could be used to control Himalayan balsam. |
