Abstract/Contents:"The procedure of pH control of irrigation water is presented to open a discussion of the procedure and because a number of people have installed systems to control the pH of irrigation water. It is very important to point out the precautions that must be taken when handling sulfuric acid or urea-sulfuric acid solutions. The irrigation water made available for the irrigation of turf areas has, in general, higher pH and progressively higher salt content. The generally accepted methods by which the soil pH control has been attempted are: 1) the application of elemental sulfur or a sulfur containing compound that can be oxidized to the sulfate ion, in the process forming excess hydrogen ions. 2) the application of nitrogen in the form of ammonium ion from sulfate or from ammonium ion producing fertilizers such as urea, urea formaldehyde, methylene ureas, ect. Sulfuric acid is a strong oxidizing agent and generates a tremendous increase in temperature when mixed with water. Never should the acid be injected into a pressurized line. Never should the acid be added to a body of water or to an open stand pipe without complete mixing. Never should the acid be added without a pH metering device that will override the addition process. The result of the irrigation water pH control systems seems to allow the plant to more easily control the active transport system. It seems that there is a greate need to pursue the testing of the procedure of irrigation water pH control because of the decline in water quality."
