Abstract/Contents:"Look for the golf designs of the 90s to carry labels like "environmentally sensitive" and "water wise". The grass roots pressure to improve the quality of our environment has made local agencies mandate that golf course construction be compatible with these concerns. Many golf course architects and planners are showing a greater sensitivity towards preserving wild life habitats, wetlands and steep hillsides. A blend of traditional and target golf design may provide the solution for combining the pleasure of playing the game and the pressures of permitting the project. The irrigation system of the 90s will be designed with advance power and water efficient equipment. Energy efficient variable frequency pump stations will drive computer controlled water-thrifty systems. Irrigation designs will emphasize uniform application of water at rates which match infiltration rates of the soil being irrigated. There will be an appreciable savings in power bills and conservation of energy. Golf course planning will see a reduction in the amount of maintained turf, converting out of play areas to naturalized drought tolerant plant material. Future golf course construction must be in harmony with the environment. As a result there may be a return to more traditioal designs."
