Abstract/Contents:"Gearld Dearie is the a fourth generation golf superintendent! First generation-Edward B. Dearie, a golf course superintendent builder for himself and for Donald Ross. He was Gearld's great grandfather. Second generation-grandfather Gerald Michael Dearie, the top golf course superintendent in the Chicago area in his time. Third generation-Jerry's father Gerald Frederic Dearie, golf course superintendent for the Medinah Country Club in the 1960's. Fourth generation- Gerald W. Dearie, golf course superintendent at the Citrus Club in La Quinta, Califorinia. With all the relatives involved in golf he either had a club or a rake in his hand throughout his youth. At sixteen he began working summers on the grounds crew. Jerry also continued to excel in his golf game, playing on the high school team and often playing with the local pros. Jerry decided he wanted to get into the management of the turf and soon enrolled at Michigan State University. Jerry worked his way up the ladder with Landmark. He was an irrigator at the TPC Stadium course, helped in the construction of the Nicklaus Resort Course, became the assistant superintendent for the LaQuinta Hotel Mountain Course and in June of 1990 was awarded superintendent position at the Citrus Course. Jerry has nearly finished his first year at the Citrus Course without any bentgrass loss. Jerry's biggest concern with the bentgrass is the salt problem. He has set intervals for flushing and relies on meter readings and visual observations before deciding to flush, avoiding unnecessary top growth and keeping the greens a tad on the lean side.
