Abstract/Contents: | "Dr. Allan Walder of HRI, Wellesbourne, reviewed the British Crop Protection Council's symposium in March 1991 at which current knowledge of pesticide persistence and movement had been presented. The microbial aspects of persistence include "enhanced degradation", when organisms adapt to degrade a pesticide. Already in the USA enzymes from particular populations of microorganisms have been isolated and used to clean containers and dissipate spills. Pesticides could also be classified in terms of mobility and persistence, and the match of pesticide and soil classifications would provide national maps of leaching risk. Ken Pearce of the Department of the Environment reviewed the legislation applicable to pesticide disposal. The Environment Protection Act will be increasingly applied to areas previously covered by the Control of Pollution Act. John Batty of the National Rivers Authority outlined the duties of the NRA to safeguard raw water quality, and focussed on atrazine and simazine. Jon Allbutt, a consultant specialising in horticultural pesticide work, stressed the value of the Orange Code as a basis for position statements and for frequent reference during work. Dr. James Gilmour of the Scottish Agricultural College at Edinburgh reviewed the excellent practical work done in Scotland to solve disposal problems. Carl Crome of Envirogreen Operations described the service which, for a collection fee starting at 175 pounds, removes unwanted pesticide material - concentrates, containers and washings - and arranges its incineration, with careful documentation throughout. Peter Beaumont of the Pesticides Trust said the Trust was not against pesticide use but in favour of effective regulation and alternatives where possible." |
