Abstract/Contents:"An official review of the residual weedkillers atrazine and simazine is almost certain to recommend restrictions, according to Terry Tooby of the MAFF Pesticides Safety Division which is carrying out the review. Mr. Tooby said that much of Britain's water was at risk of contamination from certain pesticides. Speakers focused on glyphosate as a more environmentally acceptable alternative. Glyphosate is classified as non-mobile and moderately persistent, and has not been found to contaminate ground water. Arnie Stensones of Monsanto explained that glyphosate was very effective at controlling emerged weeds, but could not prevent seedling germination. Nick Thain of Complete Weed Control suggested that three-year contracts would be in the interests of both specifiers and contractors, adding that specifiers should check that contractors were members of the NAAC, and should ask to see operators' certificates of competence."
