Abstract/Contents:"Evapotranspiration (ET) rates in turfgrass vary with species of turfgrass. The variation is often attributed to the differences in growth characteristics, leaves shape, color and shoot density. Mowing height can affect root growth and water use in turfgrass. Information on the effect of seasonal mowing heights on root growth and water use is still lacking. The objective of this study is to determine the differences in consumptive water use of four species of cool season turfgrass and the effect of seasonal mowing heights on root growth and water use of Kentucky bluegrass under Long Island conditions. Evapotranspiration (ET) by different turfgrass species vary from one period to another. This variation is attributed to growth characteristics of the turfgrass as well as climatic condition. Seasonal mowing height also affect water use rate and root length density of turfgrass. In this study substantial variation in ET were observed between species at different season of the year. Highest ET was observed at rapid growth rate of turfgrass. Seasonal mowing effect on ET was not observed due to the exceptionally wet year of both 1989 and 1990. Due to the wet growing season of both year, field study was unsuccessful for this kind of experiment."
