Abstract/Contents:"High intensity turfgrass management practiced on golf course fairway turf required consistent and effective crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) control. Typically, this is achieved with preemergent herbicides, however, failure of these herbicides is well known due to variable environmental conditions and misapplication. We evaluated the efficacy of several postemergent herbicides for crabgrass control in fairway turf. A field study was conducted with 3 applications of Acclaim applied at 14 day intervals at 0.03, 0.04, 0.06 kg ai/ha in 300 L/ha and 0.04 kg ai/ha in 997 L/ha, one application of dithiopyr at 0.28 or 0.56 kg ai/ha in combination with fenoxaprop at 0.04 hg ai/ha, and 3 applications of MSMA applied at 14 day intervals at 1.12 kg ai/ha with and without a safener. Initial applications were made when crabgrass was in the 3 leaf stage. Fenoxaprop alone at 0.06 kg ai/ha and at 0.04 in combination with dithiopyr at 0.56 kg ai/ha provided exceptional(>95%) season long control. Fenoxaprop at 0.04 kg ai/ha applied in 300 or 997 L/ha provided excellent control (>90%). Previous research has shown reduced phytotoxicity to putting green turf from high volume applications of fenoxaprop at 0.04 kg ai/ha. Dithiopyr at 0.28 or 0.56 kg ai/ha provided acceptable control (>85%) from one application. Fenoxaprop at 0.03 and MSMA at 1.12 kg ai/ha without the safener required 3 applications to provide acceptable control. However the safener, applied with MSMA, significantly reduced efficacy. This study indicates available options for excellent crabgrass control in fairway turf include, fenoxaprop alone at 0.06, 0.04 kg ai/ha at 300 and 997 L/ha, or at 0.04 kg ai/ha in combination with dithiopr at 0.56 kg ai/ha. Further experiments are underway in 1991 to assess the effectiveness of these control strategies and others for goosegrass control in bentgrass greens, tees, and fairways."
