Abstract/Contents:Salt affected soils may contain excess soluble salts, excess exchangeable sodium, or both. Such soils are generally divided into 3 groups. 1) Saline soils, 2) Sodic alkali soils, and 3) Saline-sodic alkali soils. Saline soils have a pH below 8.5 and given adequate water and drainage, these soils can be desalinized by leaching. Sodic alkali soils generally have a pH above 8.5. Sodic alkali soils contain excess sodium ions in contrast to calcium and magnesium. This causes dispersion of clay particles which results in a structureless soil with low water and air permiability. To remove sodium from the soil, amendments such as gypsum, sulfur and other sulfur-containing materials are often used. Saline-sodic (alkali) soils have a soil pH seldom above 8.5. As long as salts are present these soils are more likely to resemble saline soils. If soluble salts are leached downword, soil properties are likely to resemble those of sodic (alkali) soils. Leaching of the salts is not possible without first removing the sodium from the soil and restoring porosity.
