| Abstract/Contents: | "The failure of Acclaim to provide acceptable control of crabgrass under conditions of moisture stress is well established. Alleviation of the stress with irrigation or enhancement of efficacy with tank mixing have been investigated. In an irrigation interval test, Acclaim was applied 1 or 2 days before irrigation, the day of irrigation, and 1, 2, or 4 days after irrigation. Results indicated that optimum control was attained when Acclaim was applied the day of the irrigation event or up to 2 days after. Applications made before irrigation or more than 2 days after were less effective. More detailed experiments using a semipermeable membrane system to control soil moisture developed models for the rate of Acclaim required if irrigation were applied 48 hr or 96 hr after treatment. The results are presented in the Figure on the next page. The ability to alleviate the effects of drought were dependent on the intensity. At moderate drought stress (-.2 to -.4 MPa) Acclaim rate may be increased and irrigation applied within 96 hours to obtain control. However, in drier soils, the rate of Acclaim required exceeded the highest labeled rate. Therefore, another alternative for control under severe drought was needed." |
