| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the potential difficulties that arise in turfgrass during specific times in the year, and provides different ways turfgrass managers can go preparing their surfaces to protect against these environmental factors. Suggests leaving ryegrass and maintaining it throughout the summer instead of removing the cool-season grasses and applying fungicides to prevent disease. States that pest control will differ based on the time of year. Explains that rolling can help to smooth out the surface, but it is not a replacement for topdressing. Notes that older playing surfaces may require more drastic renovations to improve the playability of the surface due to excessive thatch accumulation, and that "irrigation uniformity is arguably the greatest issue relating to the uniformity of a playing surface over the summer months." Concludes that "the ability to mix and match is the fundamental take home message in order to provide consistent playing surfaces." |
