Abstract/Contents:"In 1973, Plant Breeders New Zealand Ltd (PBNZ) was formed, with W Weibull AB as a part owner together with the Dutch firm D. J. van der Have and the New Zealand company Pyne Gould Guinness Ltd. The intention behind the new company was the evaluation and production of cultivars and breeding lines of agricultural crops as well as turf grasses for New Zealand and Southern Australia. Furthermore, a second generation can be produced in some species during the Northern winter, which speeds up the time for the plant breeding work. Turf grass trials have been sown every year since 1975 at the experimental ground, Ceres Farm, situated near Christchurch. For the 1975 trial, we now have gathered enough information to warrant publication of the trial results (see table 1-3). The trials were sown on 26th-27th of March 1975, with three 4 m2 plots of each cultivar. The fertility regime is high, providing on the average 650 kg N, 110 kg P and 40 kg K per ha and year. The plots are cut at 25-30 mm and irrigated when necessary. The tables show the Weibull Poa pratensis cultivars Sydsport and Haga to be superior in performance. These two also show good persistence and good resistance to Drechslera poae (Helminthosporium vagans) and Puccinia spp. Drechslera poae in particular was responsible for the notable decrease in trial mean between 1976/77 and 1977/78, and almost wiped out some experimental lines. Among the red fescues, Polar and Erika from Weibullsholm also have performed very well."
