Abstract/Contents:"The 2012 Pythium foliar blight fungicide efficacy study was conducted at the Valentine Turfgrass Research Center, University Park, PA. Plots were on one year old 'Notable' perennial ryegrass maintained at 1.5-in. The trial area consisted of a native Hagerstown silt loam with a pH of 7.2. The experimental turf area was fertilized with NX Pro (29-0-10) at a rate of 0.25 lb N/ 1000 sq ft on 8 Jul. A preventative application of ProStar 70 WP at 2.2 oz per 1000 sq ft was made on 5 Jul to prevent brown patch. Plots were 3 ft x 3 ft and arranged in a randomized complete block design with three treatment replications. On 9 or 10 Jul, treatments were applied preventively with a CO2-powered sprayer at 40 psi using a TeeJet 11008E nozzle in water equivalent to 2 gal per 1,000 sq ft. On 10 Jul, the outdoor greenhouse was enclosed using a 6 mil poly film plastic sheet. Plots were inoculated on 10 Jul with a rye grain slurry containing one isolate of Pythium aphanidermatum. An overhead misting system was utilized to ensure high humidity conditions throughout the trial. Nighttime temperatures were > 65°F and relative humidity was maintained > 95% throughout the study. Disease severity (Index 0-10; 0=no disease; 10=>90% turf area blighted) was assessed 13 Jul through 20 Jul. Mean severity ratings in table are only shown until rating date of 18 Jul as all control plots were completely blighted by that date. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and multiple comparisons of the mean values were made using the Waller-Duncan k-ratio t-test (k=100). Disease development was rapid, and aerial mycelium was visible on the colonized rye grain within 2 days of inoculation. By 13 Jul, turf began to blight in untreated plots, and plots treated with PSU EXP1 and PSU EXP9. By 18 Jul, all untreated control plots were > 90% blighted. PSU EXP6 and PSU EXP7 provided exemplary control (no disease present), as did Segway at varying rates. Tank-mix combinations containing Civitas, QP Mefenoxam, and either Insignia SC or Chipco Signature also provided very good control. Disarm 480SC and Prolude provided good control but efficacy decreased as the trial persisted. Similar results were evident with tank-mixes containing QP Mefenoxam and QP Foursome. Treatments listed in order from PSU EXP7 to the Civitas tank-mixes provided very good control (<1.0 mean severity rating until the trial was data collection was completed on 20 Jul). No phytotoxicity was observed during the trial."
