Abstract/Contents:"The field experiment was conducted on a perennial ryegrass lawn area at the Penn State Berks Campus (Reading, PA). Soil pH was 6.4 with 4.2% organic matter on this native clay loam soil site. The site had not been fertilized or received any pesticide applications or supplemental irrigation during 2011 and 2012. In 2012, the site was mowed once per week with a rotary mower to a height of 3 inches and clippings removed. Foliar red thread symptoms were first observed in early June, and therefore the objective of this field trial was to evaluated fungicides for curative control of red thread. Individual plot size measured 3 ft x 5 ft and plots were arranged as a randomized complete block design with three replications. All fungicide treatments were applied only once on 15 Jun with a CO2-pressurized (40 psi) backpack sprayer, delivered in 1 gal water-carrier per 1000 sq. ft., from two 8004E flat-fan nozzles spaced 18 inches apart. Granular fertilizer (urea, 46N-0P-0K) was applied with a shaker jar and watered-in immediately with 0.1 inch water. Red thread symptoms were visually evaluated once per week as percent blot area blighted (selected rating dates shown in Table 1), and data were subjected to analysis of variance with treatment means compared by Fisher's protected least significant difference test at P <= 0.05. A range of 23 to 35 percent plot area blighted with foliar red thread symptoms was observed at the start of this field trial on 15 Jun. No fungicide treatment reduced disease symptoms by 7 days after treatment (DAT) on 22 Jun. At 14 to 21 DAT (29 Jun to 6 Jul), red thread symptoms were significantly reduced in plots treated with urea and all fungicides (except Banner MAXX) compared to the untreated plots. By 13 Jul (28 DAT), red thread symptoms were significantly reduced in plots treated with Chipco 26GT, Prostar, Heritage, Insignia, Fore or urea compared to the untreated plots. By 27 Jul (42 DAT), all fungicide treatments significantly reduced red thread symptoms compared to the untreated check, except Daconil Action, Daconil Ultrex or Daconal Weatherstik. Also by 27 Jul, red thread resurgence was observed in plots treated with any of the Daconil products or urea. The area under disease progress curve index, calculated over a 42-day interval, indicated the best control (i.e., lower index value) in plots treated with urea and all fungicide treatments, except the contact site of activity fungicides Daconil Action, Daconil Ultrex or Daconal Weatherstik. The field trial was terminated on 27 Jul due to preparations for renovating the site in August."
