Abstract/Contents:"Tupersan weed killer, a wettable powder formulation containing 50% siduron [1-(2-methyl-cyclohexyl)-3-phenylurea], controlled crabgrass, foxtail and barnyardgrass when applied before or shortly after these weeds emerged in newly seeded (before emergence) and established turf. On a silt loam soil with low organic matter content, excellent control of grass weeds was obtained with 5 pounds per acre of siduron (10 pounds of "Tupersan") in newly seede turf and with 10 pounds per acre (20 pounds of "Tupersan") in established turf. Slightly higher rates were needed for clay loam soils with higher organic matter content. Common temperate zone turfgrasses, including bluegrass, creeping red fescue and several bentgrass species, exhibited a high degree of tolerance to siduron. Rates in excess of 15 pounds per acre were safe on newly seeded turf. Three annual applications at 60 pounds per acre each year did not injure established Kentucky bluegrass turf. Root growth of susceptible species was inhibited completely in the soil zone treated with siduron, while roots of tolerant species penetrated the treated zone with continued growth. Siduron gives good season-long control at effective rates with a favorable disappearance pattern from season to season. At 5 pounds per acre, crabgrass was effectively controlled when seeded in the treated plots three months after application. An application of 20 pounds per acre was not active against sensitive grasses after one year. Common ornamental trees and shrubs have tolerated three successive annual treatments of siduron at 40 pounds per acre applied to the soil surface at the base of the plants."
