Abstract/Contents:"Methods which have been used in attempts to control M. oreades fairy rings are reviewed and new approaches to their elimination from amenity turf considered. Complete control or eradication of these rings has rarely been achieved with fungicides in solution or suspension. Verification of effectiveness is influenced by variation in intensity of ring symptoms from season to season. Several fungicides have been shown to be effective against the fungus in culture, but the hydrophobic nature of soil heavily permeated by the fungus prevents its perfusion by liquids. The fungus is superficial in the outer stimulated zone, and therefore likely to be most vulnerable to the action of fungicides, especially to those systemic materials effective against basidiomycetes, when these are applied to the ring periphery. The repeated water-soak method, sometimes effective in control is as laborious as axcavation. Increased numbers of infection foci may result from treatments which leave islands of living mycelium. the use of volatile fungicides, with soil cultivation, but leaving the soil in situ, provides the most reliable method for elimination. Rings "grow out" in time against physical and biological barriers. "Growing out" may be hastened by increasing plot perimeters with such barriers. It appears possible to use the antagonism of soil microflora and mutual antagonism in M. oreades itself to eliminate rings from turf where there is abundant natural soil inoculum. In this, treatment consists in mixing M. oreades infested soil thoroughly with non-ring soil. It is essential to practise deep irrigation to reduce the risk of reinfestation."
