Abstract/Contents:"Different amounts of Sclerotinia-infested ryegrass grain were used to inoculate a bentgrass green to establish a wide range of disease severities. Plots 1 m2 [m to the second power] were visually assessed by four raters using a 0 to 100 percentage scale. Reflectance values at 600 and 800 nm were also recorded from each plot using a hand-held radiometer. Color photographs were digitized and analyzed by the ISU Image Analysis Facility. Visual and remote sensing evaluation were repeated 24 hrs. later to obtain intra-rater reliability estimates. Correlations among raters were performed to obtain inter-rater reliability estimates. Intra-rater reliability estimates ranged from 98.0 to 99.5 % using the radiometric method as compared to 91.2 to 99.0 % using the visual scale. The reliability estimate for the image analysis method was only 80.1 %. Inter-rater reliabilities were highest for the radiometric method (99.2 to 99.8%) and were only slightly lower for the visual method (88.7 to 94.5%). However, the radiometric method had lower standard errors and less bias (slopes closer to 1.0) than the visual method."
