Abstract/Contents:Profiles billbugs, their development cycles, biological characteristics, geographical habitats, and control methods. Discusses the two species found in the United States, Sphenophorus parvulus and S. minimus. Describes their physical appearances and how to identify them. Explains the different life stages of the billbug and the damages each presents to its turfgrass habitat. States that "there are three chemical approaches to managing billbugs, they include: 1) Larval preventative, 2) Adult curative and 3) Lareval curative...The second effective billbug management strategy is to apply an adult curative insecticide to active adults in the spring." Recommends to use the "tug-test" to confirm the presence of billbug larvae.
