| Abstract/Contents: | "Fifty-two cultivars, of which 39 had not previously been grown at Bingley, were tested under intensive management for 2 1/2 years. In the year of sowing there was serious damage by Drechslera poae on some cultivars, this damage being positively correlated with density of establishment. Invasion of Poa annua, at this stage and subsequently, emphasized differences in persistence. The final ground cover ranking, already more or less achieved a year after sowing, shows close correlations with short growth in row plots and the consensus of various ratings for resistance to D. poae. There is a suggestion, however, that some cultivars were too low-growing to compete effectively with P. annua. A summary table shows 25 cultivars not significantly different from one another in the best group for final ground cover, though six of these can be picked out as particularly good in other respects also. Another five cultivars were as good as the six just mentioned except in final ground cover. These eleven were all cultivars undergoing their first trial at Bingley." |
