| Abstract/Contents: | The wear tolerance of 6 turfgrasses (Lolium perenne cv. Aberystwyth S.23, Poa pratensis cv. Sydsport, Phleum pratense cv. Aberystwyth S.48, Agrostis tenuis cv. Highland, Festuca rubra cv. Highlight and Poa annua) was determined in plots raised from turf seed. Overall, each species was ranked similarly in both trials. Poa annua varied considerably but was generally rated the most tolerant together with L. perenne, followed by P. pratensis + Phleum pratense, F. rubra and A. tenuis. In turf-raised plots there was a significant correlation between percentage fibre and wear tolerance after 1 month and 2 months of wear. In seed-raised plots, no correlations were found after 1 month between growth attributes measured before wear and the observed wear tolerance. However, after 2 months, both the biomass and the fibre/unit area were correlated with wear tolerance. |
