| Abstract/Contents: | The sward characteristics of Festuca/Agrostis turf grown on sixteen different sand and sand-soil rootzones were examined during the period of grass establishment and over the first year of simulated wear. Rootzone composition had an important effect on species composition with a greater content of Festuca on the sand-dominated rootzones. After the start of wear the proportion of Agrostis increased in all rootzone types and 25 months from the sowing date the amount of Poa annua L. averaged 12% across the trial area. Rootzone composition had effects on a number of other aspects of sward. Seedling establishment was noticeably worse on the pure sand plots and these also had a poor winter appearance. Take-all patch disease affected the whole trial area but the area affected was generally greater on the sand-soil mixes than the pure sand plots. |
