Abstract/Contents:"Ergot, caused by Claviceps purpurea, is a persistent problem in Kentucky bluegrass (KBG) and perennial ryegrass (PRG) grown for seed in the Columbia Basin of Oregon (OR) and Washington (WA). The objective of this research was to quantify and describe the spatial patterns of ergot infection in commercial KBG and PRG fields in OR and WA to better understand the epidemiology of ergot in large (50 ha) first-year fields. A total of 1072 and 1433 quadrats were examined in two KBG and three PRG fields, respectively. Ten inflorescences were collected from quadrats located 10 m apart along transects following every other center pivot irrigation wheel track. The percentage of quadrats containing at least one inflorescence bearing sclerotia ranged from 0 to 29% in KBG fields and 59 to 90% in PRG fields. The mean incidence of KBG and PRG inflorescences with ergot ranged from 0 to 2% and 12 to 25%, respectively. Mean severity indices ranged from 0 to 0.7 for KBG and 1.8 to 4.1 for PRG. Significant (P<0.05) clustering was observed at the overall field level in one KBG field and all three PRG fields using Moran's I and SADIE indices of aggregation. Negative binomial regression indicated that ergot severity in PRG significantly (P<0.01) decreased with increasing distance from established, neighboring PRG fields. Although ergot incidence was widely distributed throughout first-year KBG and PRG fields, ergot severity was characterized by aggregated foci of intense disease severity."
