Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard:"A very rare, small book that contains major revisions, especially in the planning and construction of golf courses in the United Kingdom. Major sections are devoted to pest control in turfgrasses. Reginald Beale had the following observations on materials used for topdressing turfgrasses in England in the 1930s:

Pure sand is composed of minute fragments of stone; charcoal is calcined wood or bone; and breeze, cinder, clinker and coke dust partly burnt coal. None of these materials is of any real manurial value and they are primarily used to open up stiff soils, improve the surface drainage and make the putting surface firm and true." p. 168
Beard Section Heading:Bibliography of books/monographs on turfgrass culture
