Abstract/Contents:Discusses the marketing factors present when golf courses add an extra thousand yards of length to their courses. States that "typically, it is an ego-driven decision or the result of golf consultants who insist the courses must be long to be taken seriously." Compares this to how car manufacturers label unattainably high speeds on their speedometers to "make the driver feel they are driving a "sportier" car when, in fact, what they have is a very average vehicle." Concludes that having longer courses is not a bad thing, and recommends that before adding length the owners and clubs "take a long look in the mirror at what their real needs are."
