Abstract/Contents:Ground cover and playing quality were measured on five types of construction used for the Association Football pitches which were subjected to simulated wear. The types of construction were: pipe drainage; silt drainage; silt drainage with a 25mm sand top; sand carpet; and sand profile. Ground cover was lost very rapidly when pipe drainage alone was used and, for example, during the first eight weeks of wear of the 1988-89 season, ground cover on the pipe drained pitch was waterlogged in wet weather with a consequent effect on its playing quality. On the other hand the silt drainage (sand top), sand carpet and sand profile constructions retained good playing characteristics on all sampling dates. It is suggested that silt drainage and sand carpet techniques provided the most satisfactory compromise between surface quality and construction costs.
